Replication(Richard Kalvar)

I could see the photograph replicated at our school. The benches and the field could be the soccer field and the wooden benches. I can imagine two silly high schoolers goofing off on the side lines, showing each other up much like these two little girls.

Heisler Photo Critique

1] what specifically is the purpose of heisler's photographs? is it simply vanity-driven or does it perform a deeper function?
I think that heisler's photo has a deeper meaning to it. That it shows some type of insight into the person.

2] as many of heisler's photos are made for specific stories or magazine covers they have a specific look, but are they fundementally different from gordon parks' "american gothic"?
They both have similar set ups, in the fact that they are portraits that are layed out. But park' photos seem to be more real than set up.

3] pick the portrait of the actor hugh grant from the prophoto.com website and critique it for content, purpose, and effectiveness.
I believe that this photo shows a strong man, obviously a runner of some sort. The image portrays a strong willed and strong bodied black man. The purpose of this photograph, in my opinion, is to show how far the African American race has come in society. They are no longer holding mops and brooms, but are athletic stars. I think this photo made it's point clearly and overall was an exceptional photo.

Robert Frank

This photograph has an interesting subject matter, as the two men are focused intensely on the road ahead of them. The range of this photo is also interesting. The proximity of being so close makes the viewer feel like they are sitting in the seat next to them. I think this picture shows an insight into an everyday drive down the road and possibly how secluded American individuals can be given certain situations, such as being photographed. The overall quality of the photo exceptional. There are depictable details and the contrast between black and white is clear.

American Gothic Review

1] what you see in the photograph [simple and objective] - an African American woman is holding a mop and a broom in front of an American flag.

2] what the photo looks like its saying to you [your initial analysis] - America isn't always what it seems and certainly wasn't back then. The photo shows the real life of the underdogs behind the flag, the true working class.

3] comparisons and contrasts to grant wood's "american gothic" - They both show similar portrait styles, neither look very happy, and they are both holding tools. In Wood's photo the people are well dressed, in front of a nice farm house, and show that if you work hard, you can be successful. Meanwhile, Gordon's photo shows a black woman in work clothes, in front of a flag, and shows that no matter how hard you work segregation and discrimination will in some cases prevent you from getting any farther.

4] what you think the the photograph really means [your interpretation] - I think it shows life of regular people doing everyday things, but posed in a really different and contrivercial way.

5] whether or not you think that it is a successful photograph - I think it is successful in showing the everyday people in a different way.
